Counter offers

If you’re a software engineer (or work in tech) and are presented with 2 job offers at once and dont know which one to take, think about a few things..

My opinion is to take the money away from them, especially if its a counter-offer from your current place. Take the money and what are you left with?

  • Which role is going to put you out of your comfort zone?

  • Which opportunity has better potential mentors for you?

  • Which company will actually support learning, help you grow and become a better communicator?

  • Which opportunity will have actual measurable OKRs, set out by your manager, for both your performance at work and personally to achieve your bonus/goals/promotion?

  • Which company will promote trialling/bringing in new tech for you to work with?

Accepting a counter-offer or different offer, because its $10k or $15k more, isn’t going to motivate you to get out of bed after 6 months of working there, especially when you realise the difference isn’t all that great after tax.
