2021 Talent Shortage
Well, what a position we find ourselves in now. This time last year companies were receiving their job-keeper payments and now the majority of recruitment agencies have more roles on than they can handle.
Personally I feel grateful were in this spot considering last year was so challenging. Its still tough out there, but better than 2020! Closed borders & no new talent entering the country has definitely had a knock-on effect.
Over the last quarter Sam, Dexter and myself have noticed a few shifts in the market that are worth pointing out. Some of these may resonate with you & could add some value;
1) Candidates in tech are literally securing roles within a week. That’s first conversation to signing of a contract within days 4-5 days. It seems companies are aware of this minor war for talent and are taking chances & fast-tracking their processes internally.
2) Coding/technical assessments for software engineers; candidates personal projects and Githubs are now being taken into account more to technically assess them rather than them having to complete a companies typical coding exercise. We actually think this is a good thing! Again, this is for speed. If you’re a business expecting a great solution to your 4-8 hour take-home coding challenge, you may find candidates ghosting you at this point.
3) Trying to hire experienced seniors is tough right now; it’s what everyone wants. Have a think about; how could you ‘widen those goalposts’ in terms of finding talent? Could you re-structure your team / promote within and hire less experienced / mid-level people? Have you looked closely at who you could promote internally? Maybe theres someone already there that could save you this process.
A few talking points here anyway. Please drop me a line if you need help, have questions or want to chat; nick@tekfinder.com.au
